Calculate running pace, finish time, or distance from the other two values, in km or miles, with your pace shown per km and per mile.

Race finish times by pace

Hold a steady pace per mile and this is roughly when you cross the line:

A 5K is 3.11 miles, a 10K is 6.21 miles, a half marathon is 13.1 miles and a marathon is 26.2 miles.

Common goal paces

  • Sub-25 minute 5K: about 8:03 per mile (5:00 per km).
  • Sub-2 hour half marathon: about 9:09 per mile.
  • Sub-4 hour marathon: about 9:09 per mile, the same pace held for twice the distance.

To find the pace for your own goal, choose "Pace" as the value to solve for, enter the race distance and your target time, and the calculator gives the pace per mile or per km.

Using pace in training

Most plans don't run every workout at race pace. Easy runs are usually 1 to 2 minutes per mile slower than your goal race pace, so a runner aiming for 9:00 miles in a half marathon might do easy days at 10:00 to 11:00 per mile. Tempo runs sit closer to race pace, and intervals are faster. Working out these paces ahead of time makes it easier to check your watch mid-run and stay on target.

Keep in mind that hills, heat, wind and crowded race starts all slow you down, so treat calculated finish times as a best case for a flat course on a good day.

Frequently asked questions

How is pace different from speed?

Pace is time per unit distance (minutes per km or mile) — the way runners usually think about effort. Speed is distance per unit time (km/h or mph) — the way it's usually shown for cycling or driving.

Can I calculate any one of the three values?

Yes — pick which value you want to solve for (pace, time, or distance), fill in the other two, and it's calculated instantly.

What pace do I need for a 4-hour marathon?

About 9:09 per mile, or 5:41 per km. Because a marathon is 26.2 miles, even 10 seconds per mile slower adds over 4 minutes to your finish time.

How do I convert pace to mph?

Divide 60 by your pace in minutes. An 8:00 mile is 7.5 mph, a 10:00 mile is 6 mph and a 12:00 mile is 5 mph — handy for setting a treadmill.

Is a 10-minute mile good?

Yes, for most recreational runners. A 10:00 pace finishes a 5K in about 31 minutes and a half marathon in about 2 hours 11 minutes — a comfortable, steady pace for many recreational runners.
