GPA Calculator
Add your courses and credit hours to get your grade point average.
Enter each course's letter grade and credit hours to calculate a weighted GPA on the standard 4.0 scale — add as many courses as you need.
How GPA is calculated
- Convert each letter grade to grade points on the 4.0 scale.
- Multiply the grade points by the course's credit hours.
- Add up those totals and divide by the total number of credit hours.
Worked example
| Course | Grade | Credits | Grade points × credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| English | A− | 3 | 3.7 × 3 = 11.1 |
| Biology | B+ | 4 | 3.3 × 4 = 13.2 |
| Calculus | B | 4 | 3.0 × 4 = 12.0 |
| History | A | 3 | 4.0 × 3 = 12.0 |
| Spanish | C+ | 3 | 2.3 × 3 = 6.9 |
That's 55.2 grade points over 17 credits, so the semester GPA is 55.2 ÷ 17 = 3.25.
Why credit hours matter
A 4-credit lab science weighs more in your GPA than a 2-credit elective. Raising a grade in a high-credit course moves your GPA more than the same improvement in a low-credit one, so it's worth knowing where your study time will count most.
The 4.0 scale used here
A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0 and F = 0.0. Not sure what letter grade a percentage is? Use the Letter Grade Calculator first.
Frequently asked questions
What grade point scale does this use?
The standard US 4.0 scale: A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, F = 0.0.
How is GPA calculated?
Each course's grade points are multiplied by its credit hours, those are all added together, then divided by the total credit hours — so a 4-credit course counts twice as much as a 2-credit one.
How do I enter an A+?
Most US colleges cap grade points at 4.0, so an A+ counts the same as an A. Choose A for any A+ grades.
Is this a weighted or unweighted GPA?
Unweighted. Many high schools add extra points for honors, AP or IB classes (often +0.5 or +1.0), giving a weighted GPA above 4.0. This calculator uses the standard 4.0 scale without those bonuses.
How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?
Multiply your previous GPA by the credits it covers, add this semester's grade points, and divide by the total credits. For example, a 3.20 GPA over 30 credits plus a semester worth 55.2 points over 17 credits gives (96 + 55.2) ÷ 47 = 3.22.
Do pass/fail classes count?
Usually not. Pass/fail and credit/no-credit courses earn credits toward graduation but generally aren't included in GPA, so leave them out here unless your school says otherwise.
