How to calculate a tip
- Tip = bill × (tip % ÷ 100)
- Total = bill + tip
- Per person = total ÷ number of people
Worked example
Dinner for two comes to $85.00. A 20% tip is 85 × 0.20 = $17.00, so the total is $102.00, or $51.00 each when split between two people. At 18% on a $64.50 bill, the tip is $11.61 and the total is $76.11.

Tipping in the US
Tipping customs vary by service and region, but sit-down restaurant service is where tips are most expected, commonly in the 15–20% range. For other services — delivery, rideshare, salons, hotel staff — expectations differ, and many payment screens now suggest amounts for you. How is the per-person amount calculated?
The bill plus the tip is divided evenly by the number of people — it doesn't split individual items, just the total.
Should I tip on the total before or after tax?
Many people calculate the tip on the pre-tax amount, since tax isn't part of the service, but tipping on the total after tax is also common and slightly more generous. Enter whichever amount you prefer as the bill.
How do I work out a tip in my head?
Find 10% by moving the decimal point one place left ($48.00 becomes $4.80). Double it for 20% ($9.60), or add half of it for 15% ($4.80 + $2.40 = $7.20).
How do I split a bill unevenly?
This calculator splits the total equally. If people ordered very different amounts, work out each person's share of the bill first, then apply the same tip percentage to each share.
