Type a value directly, or click a field to choose from the dropdown.
Convert a date between the Bikram Sambat calendar used in Nepal and the Gregorian (AD) calendar, using an exact per-year reference table rather than an approximation — since BS month lengths vary by year and aren't a fixed formula.
What is Bikram Sambat (BS)?
Bikram Sambat is Nepal's official calendar, used on citizenship certificates, passports, school records and government documents. It runs about 56 years and 8 months ahead of the English (Gregorian, AD) calendar, and its year begins in mid-April. Unlike the English calendar, its month lengths change from year to year — a month can have 29, 30, 31 or 32 days — so converting needs a published reference table rather than a simple formula.
Examples
- October 21, 2026 AD = Kartik 4, 2083 BS
- January 1, 2026 AD = Poush 17, 2082 BS
- Baisakh 1, 2083 BS (Nepali New Year) = April 14, 2026 AD
Nepali months and their English equivalents
| BS month | Roughly | BS month | Roughly |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Baisakh | mid-Apr – mid-May | 7. Kartik | mid-Oct – mid-Nov |
| 2. Jestha | mid-May – mid-Jun | 8. Mangsir | mid-Nov – mid-Dec |
| 3. Asar | mid-Jun – mid-Jul | 9. Poush | mid-Dec – mid-Jan |
| 4. Shrawan | mid-Jul – mid-Aug | 10. Magh | mid-Jan – mid-Feb |
| 5. Bhadra | mid-Aug – mid-Sep | 11. Falgun | mid-Feb – mid-Mar |
| 6. Aswin | mid-Sep – mid-Oct | 12. Chaitra | mid-Mar – mid-Apr |
The exact start of each month shifts by a day or two from year to year, which is why the converter uses day-by-day reference data instead of these rough ranges.
Converting a date of birth for official forms
Nepali documents record dates of birth in BS, but many international forms — visas, university applications, foreign employment and online accounts — ask for an AD date. Enter the BS date exactly as printed on your citizenship certificate or passport, and copy the AD result. It's worth double-checking the converted date against any document that already shows both, since a one-day difference matters on official records.
Frequently asked questions
Why doesn't a Nepali date converter use a simple formula?
Unlike the Gregorian calendar, Bikram Sambat months don't have fixed lengths — each year's month lengths are set individually by Nepal's official calendar. An accurate converter needs real reference data for each year rather than a fixed rule.
What years are supported?
BS 2000–2090 — covering the range published in this site's reference table. Dates outside that range can't be converted accurately.
Is the conversion accurate?
Yes — it uses an exact per-year, per-month reference table (not an approximation), anchored to the well-established equivalence of Baisakh 1, 2000 BS = April 14, 1943 AD.
How do I convert my date of birth from BS to AD?
Choose BS to AD, enter your birth year, month and day exactly as written on your Nepali document, and the tool shows the matching English (AD) date. This is useful when an application, visa or school form asks for your date of birth in AD.
How many years ahead of AD is BS?
About 56 years and 8 months. For dates from mid-April to December, the BS year is the AD year plus 57; from January to mid-April, it is the AD year plus 56.
When does the Nepali new year start?
Bikram Sambat years begin on Baisakh 1, which usually falls on April 13 or 14 in the English calendar. For example, 2083 BS began on April 14, 2026.
