Nepal VAT Calculator
Add or remove Nepal's 13% VAT from any amount.
This rate is tentative, not official — the government can revise VAT rates at any time. Always verify the current rate against an IRD circular before relying on this for real invoicing or filing.
Calculate Value Added Tax under Nepal's VAT Act 2052 — add VAT to a pre-tax amount, or pull the VAT back out of a tax-inclusive price, at the standard 13% rate or any custom rate.
How to calculate VAT
- Adding VAT: VAT = price × 13%. Total = price × 1.13.
- Removing VAT from a VAT-inclusive price: price before VAT = total ÷ 1.13. VAT = total − price before VAT.
Worked examples
| Situation | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Add VAT to Rs 100,000 | 100,000 × 13% | VAT Rs 13,000 · Total Rs 113,000 |
| Remove VAT from Rs 113,000 | 113,000 ÷ 1.13 | Before VAT Rs 100,000 · VAT Rs 13,000 |
| Add VAT to Rs 2,500 | 2,500 × 13% | VAT Rs 325 · Total Rs 2,825 |
A common mistake
To find the VAT inside a total, don't take 13% of the total. 13% of Rs 113,000 is Rs 14,690 — too much. The correct VAT is Rs 13,000, because the 13% was charged on the price before VAT. Use "Remove VAT" mode, or divide by 1.13.
Who uses it
- Businesses preparing quotations and VAT invoices.
- Shoppers checking how much VAT is included in a bill.
- Accountants reconciling purchase and sales books before filing VAT returns.

Frequently asked questions
What is Nepal's VAT rate?
The standard rate is 13%, unchanged since VAT was introduced under the Value Added Tax Act 2052 (1996) and confirmed again in the Finance Act for FY 2082/83.
Are any goods or services 0% VAT?
Yes — exports and certain supplies listed in Schedule 2 of the VAT Act are zero-rated. Some items are fully VAT-exempt rather than zero-rated; those aren't part of a VAT calculation at all.
Is VAT charged on the service charge in restaurants?
Generally yes — in restaurants and hotels, VAT is usually calculated on the bill including the service charge. Check the bill format your business uses with your accountant.
