How to Calculate Name Numerology

Name numerology assigns a number to each letter in a name, adds them up, and reduces the total to a single digit (or a master number). This guide walks through the Pythagorean method step by step, for entertainment purposes.

The letter chart

Each letter maps to a number 1-9, cycling through the alphabet three times:

1A, J, S
2B, K, T
3C, L, U
4D, M, V
5E, N, W
6F, O, X
7G, P, Y
8H, Q, Z
9I, R

Worked example: "John Smith"

Step 1 — convert each letter to its number:

J=1, O=6, H=8, N=5, S=1, M=4, I=9, T=2, H=8

Step 2 — add them all together:

1 + 6 + 8 + 5 + 1 + 4 + 9 + 2 + 8 = 44

Step 3 — reduce to a single digit (44 is not a master number, so keep reducing):

4 + 4 = 8

"John Smith" has a name number of 8.

Master numbers: when to stop reducing

If a reduction step ever lands exactly on 11, 22, or 33, tradition holds that number as a "master number" instead of reducing it further to a single digit. Any other two-digit (or larger) total keeps getting added digit by digit until one digit remains.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Pythagorean numerology chart?

It assigns each letter of the alphabet a number from 1 to 9, repeating in order: A=1 through I=9, then J=1 through R=9, then S=1 through Z=8.

What are master numbers?

In this tradition, 11, 22, and 33 are considered master numbers and are kept as-is instead of being reduced further to a single digit, even though they are two-digit numbers.

Do spaces or middle names count?

Spaces themselves aren't assigned a value, but every letter in every name you include adds to the total — so a full name gives a different number than a first name alone.

Is name numerology scientifically accurate?

No — numerology isn't a scientifically validated practice. This follows the standard traditional method purely for entertainment.
