Important: schools use different scales

  • US schools often set their own cutoffs — at one school 90% is an A−, at another it's an A.
  • Weighted GPAs (where honors or AP classes count up to 5.0) can't be converted on a 4.0 scale.
  • India, Nepal and other countries use 10-point CGPA scales or percentage grades with their own official conversions, often set by the university or exam board.

When an application asks for a percentage, check whether your school or the receiving institution publishes an official formula. If it does, use that; if not, this approximate scale is a reasonable estimate. Many universities and credential evaluation services also convert transcripts themselves.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official GPA-to-percentage conversion?

No — there's no single universal standard. Different schools and countries map GPA to percentage differently. This uses a commonly published approximate scale as a general reference, not an official conversion.

Why would I need to convert GPA to percentage?

Common when applying to schools or programs in a country that uses a different grading system than where you studied.

What percentage is a 3.5 GPA?

On this scale, a 3.5 GPA is about 92.8%, between a B+ (3.3, 91%) and an A− (3.7, 94.5%). Your school's own scale may differ slightly.
